Senior David Kim, known for his academic success and sarcastic humor, also spends time honing his skills on the violin. For the past eight years, Kim practiced, improved and cherishes his musical talent.

A man of few words, Kim also shares how he feels about his ability to play the violin. Starting at a young age, Kim has mastered the art of the violin and has been noticed, whether from the high school to the county’s orchestra.

On top of working hard in school and wrapping up senior year, which he states was, “not difficult,” Kim has managed to spend time practicing his skills, and hopes to continue playing throughout later years. While he appreciates music, he plans on remaining faithful to his violin, stating that he has no plans to play any other instrument.

To Kim, music is not merely listening to a collection of noise produced by objects, but rather, utilizing instruments to create art, “using sound as expression,” and allowing the audience to enjoy not only what they hear, but what they feel.

Of all the memories Kim has of the violin, his most memorable is of when it all began—”buying it,” he said. Through the countless rehearsals, performances and pieces he experienced, his favorite piece to play remains “Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor.”

As an experienced violinist, Kim has performed in both in-school and out-of-school concerts, and currently resides as a first-chair member of Neshaminy’s orchestra. What began as practicing the violin at school has become an essential part to who Kim is—witty, in love with Kanye West, and above all else, a talented violinist with a passion for what the music he creates.
