Despite apathetic attitudes, teenagers still have active voice

By Austin Bucci

You know what’s not Gucci? Apathy. “Does it even matter?” “Why should I really care though?” The growing trend of not caring about anything really needs to stop. We as the millennial generation are becoming consistently classified by our apathy. We have become a generation defined by our unwillingness to take action.

Teenagers feel as though they don’t have a voice in society when they are bred from the start to only associate with insignificance, when in fact, teenagers have arguably the strongest voices of all. In the 70s, it was the teenagers who banded together and became the driving force to withdraw U.S. force. To suppress the voice, future generations grew up with increasing technological opportunities that taught isolation instead of unity.

With increased world networks and social media allowing us to connect with anyone in the world, at any moment, we have more power than ever in our individual voices, which is why I feel like technology is such an amazing thing, but only if we use it right.

The general outlook is that our lives are essentially meaningless. Technology makes life easier for everyone and social media has become less social and more of a distractor from reality. We have more free time and no creative use of it. No one is dependent on us, we could disappear and it wouldn’t cause much of an impact. This thought process leads to apathy, and when there’s nothing to care about, suicide rates go up.

It may feel as though we don’t have a voice, but that couldn’t be farther from the case. Our voices matter more than we know. A cynical outlook of “oh I’m just one person, what can I do?” is toxic. People, especially young people, have the power to start a movement. Social media, if used right can start a revolution if enough people rally. Pick a cause. Get involved. Our generation’s voice is only small if we make it small. Because despite whatever façade you think you’re putting on, you do care about something. I know you do.
