‘Woman in Black’ sequel draws mixed reaction

Set 40 years after the events of the original ‘Woman in Black,’, ‘Angel of Death’ follows a new set of characters to Eel Marsh House. While fleeing from the blitz in London during World War II Eve Parkins (Phoebe Fox) is a schoolteacher evacuating her students with Headmistress Hogg (Helen McCrory), to the small town of Crythin Gifford where they hide out at the home. The home is haunted by the ghost called the Woman in Black who feeds off the grief of an orphan named Edward, and uses him to murder some of the children.

Eve figures out what is going with the Woman in Black pretty quickly and, when she’s not distracted by a romantic subplot with war pilot Harry (Jeremy Irvine), she would try to investigate and find out just what it is the audience wants.

Despite that, the jump scares were rather disappointing as the film relied much on silence and the sudden crescendo of the music or suddenly the audience is faced with the sudden image of the ghost’s screaming face. However, there were one or two jump scares that I found were effective.

Besides that, the film was beautifully shot, making the house and surroundings haunting and eerie. They did an amazing job portraying how the children’s corpses were found and the hole in the ceiling above Edward’s bed brought great effects. It was amazing how they were still able to portray the creepy Woman in Black whether she was standing in the corner of a room or in the woods.

All in all, ‘The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death,’ was not a bad movie, but mediocre. They had a nice developed story line and some of the effects were amazing, but part of the issue was that the characters were trying to find out what the audience already knows from having seen the first film and the lack of effective jump scares were disappointing.
