New movie sheds light on high school

Based off the bestseller YA book by Kody Keplinger, “The Duff” is a teen comedy movie that follows the story of 17-year-old senior Bianca Piper (Mae Whitman), and her life as an outsider in her stereotypical high school. Even worse, she must deal with the label, ‘The Duff,’ or Designated Ugly Fat Friend to her prettier, more popular friends, Casey and Jessica (Bianca A. Santos and Skyler Samuels).

Despite the advice her favorite teacher, Mr. Arthur (Ken Jeong), gives her, she puts aside her crush, Toby (Nick Eversman), and enlists Wesley (Robbie Amell), a charming jock, into her life in order to improve her status at school. To prevent her senior year from turning into a complete disaster, Bianca must find a way to overthrow the school’s ruthless label maker Madison (Bella Thorne) and remind everyone that no matter what people look or act like, every person is someone’s ‘Duff.’

“That’s kind of why I wanted to do this,” said Whitman to Variety magazine. “I wanted to shed some light on this vortex we’ve created, that no matter how you look or how you feel there’s always something that you’re not, and that’s destructive.”
The CBS film, “The Duff” will open in theaters Feb. 20, 2015.
