The factions focused on things such as kindness, telling the truth, and knowledge. If somebody chose to switch from the faction that they were born in, they would be separated from their family and their friends.

Beatrice is trying to stop a war between the Amity, people that believe in kindness, and the Erudite, who believe in knowledge. There are also people very skilled in battle whose faction is called Dauntless. The Dauntless are split in half, one side supports Amity, and the other sided with the Erudite. Throughout the book, the Erudite have the advantage because the leaders of the Dauntless joined them, and they have the Erudite’s battle technology.
