On Jan. 11 Neshaminy’s past students were celebrated and honored for their accomplishments on the athletic spectrum. Coaches, players and even Athletic Directors have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, but all of these individuals are connected by the fact that they are all Neshaminy ’Skins.
“I may not have been here long, but I already know the joy of walking away from a basketball game in which Neshaminy beats Pennsbury,” Superintendent Robert Copeland said at the induction ceremony; “Now if you will excuse me I am going to go watch our girls’ basketball team beat Pennsbury.”
Copeland perfectly commemorated Neshaminy spirit and pride in his speech. Congratulating the inductees for this honor, Copeland also thanked the inductees for being outstanding people and role models to present Neshaminy students.
“It feels great coming back and being among so many Neshaminy greats,” former track coach Chuck Lumio said. Lumio who once coached Cyrus O. Wesley, Lumio served not only as a coach to Wesley but a role model. After his speech Wesley and Lumio embraced each other sharing an emotional moment seldom seen.
However, not all inducted could be present on, Al Moss who passed away June 10, 2011. Left a 21 year legacy at Neshaminy and a 30 year legacy as the Junior Bowling Coach at Penndel Lanes. Besides being a revered Coach, Moss was also a Neshaminy Graduate, class of 1956; he lettered in both baseball and wrestling.
Also inducted into the Hall of Fame was football placekicker Kevin Kelly. Kelly holds multiple records in the NCAA: all-time leading scorer for Penn State, all-time kicker scoring leader for The Big Ten, tied for longest field goal in Penn State history, most consecutive field goals in Penn State history and most career field goals in Penn State history.
Born in raised in Bristol, Kelly turned scholarship offers from Syracuse and The University of Delaware and accepted a scholarship from Penn State instead. Among all his records, Kelly has also left a mark on Penn State. In the 2006 “Orange Bowl,” Kelly kicked the game winning 29 yard field goal to beat Florida State 26-23.
The induction ceremony truly gave everyone present a chance to look at all of the achievements Neshaminy students have accomplished.
