Sports are seen as impressive displays of athleticism, strategy, and discipline, but somewhere along the line, some sports blurred the lines between absurdity and reality. I’m here to take you through a few sports that aren’t your typical Sunday Night games — they’re bizarre and confusing, but completely real.
Marble Leagues
What is it?
When scouring the internet for something to watch, I came across the obscure community of marble fanatics and a professional marble league. While others may only think of marbles as a toy their great grandparents played with, there’s a group who commit their entire lives to their marble “teams.” And by teams, I mean they truly are treated just like major sports teams, with each having a name, rivals, and dedicated fans. For instance, to any avid fan, it’s seen as common sense that any self-respecting O’rangers fan wouldn’t go within a 10-mile radius of a Savage Speeder supporter, as if it were the Eagles and the Cowboys.
How does it work?
The events consist of multiple types of challenges for the marbles. While the headline is usually the typical races, some rounds focus on balancing on beams, surviving the funnel, or navigating mazes. The leagues have even found a creative way of integrating their viewers into the races, with their fans being represented by the marbles sitting in the bleachers, cheering on their favorite teams. Any other community would see that the rounds boil down to games of chance, but the events are never framed as such. Some major enthusiasts even track the marble’s stats and create fantasy leagues. And the genuine way in which this sport is executed is thanks in no small part to Greg Woods, the charismatic main Marble Leagues commentator, who narrates every event with complete sincerity. Woods’ live reporting adds an extra layer of humor with the way he describes things such as marbles chipping and crashing as “injuries.”
As ridiculous as this may all sound, after I stumbled across the leagues years ago, I couldn’t help but continue watching out of pure fascination, and even found myself becoming an invested member of the marble community. I was horrified when a chunk of the marble Momomomo was sent careening from its body after a nearly fatal fidget spinner collision, I was outraged when the O’rangers were falsely accused of cheating, and I always found myself coming back for more.
Underwater Hockey
What is it?
While everyone is familiar with hockey, people have hardly ever heard about its neglected little brother, Underwater Hockey (also known as Octopush). The games are strangely fascinating to watch, with the players battling for control of a weighted puck with sticks, all while being submerged in a pool. The “underwater” part of its name is essential: players must practice holding their breath for long periods of time, and if at any point they have to come up for air, they’ll signal their teammate to take their place below the water while they surface.
How is it different than normal hockey?
One of the biggest differences between hockey players and underwater hockey players is that the latter can’t communicate with one another. The entire time they’re underwater, they are completely incapable of speaking with their teammates at all, which makes pre-planning strategies and finding alternative ways to communicate all the more important. Many participants say that having to find new creative ways to convey information brings them closer together, making the sport really popular among those seeking a strong community.
Chess Boxing
What is it?
If you’ve ever thought that chess didn’t have enough left hooks, then this might be the sport for you. Chess Boxing is an unusual combination of wits and brawn, with the skillsets seeming to belong to two opposite types of people; however, it’s necessary to be good at both in order to win a match.
How does it work?
In Chess Boxing, two opponents switch between rounds of chess and boxing, gradually draining each other mentally and physically, with the round ending with a knockout or checkmate. So, for a player to stand a chance, they not only have to outwit their opponent, but they also have to overpower them. Each round gets progressively harder on both competitors, as it’s not quite easy to remember where they moved their rook after a sharp blow to the skull.
The niche community surrounding Chess Boxing, despite sounding like a joke or a parody, takes the sport quite seriously, and the best Chess Boxers are highly respected. Many fans claim it teaches balance and humility, because nothing keeps your ego in check like being checkmated by the guy you just punched in the face.
Parkour Tag
What is it?
If you thought tag was just for kids on playgrounds, then these professional taggers may say otherwise. In World Chase Tag, an international parkour tag championship, the chaser has to navigate a maze of platforms, walls, and metal beams, to ultimately catch the runner. Meanwhile, the evader is vaulting and diving around like Spider-Man. It creates this mesmerizing display of two people who have mastered movement, attempting to evade and catch one another.
How does it work?
The chaser only has 20 seconds to tag the evader in a 46-foot square arena. If they fail, then the evader’s team scores a point, and if they succeed, then their team scores a point. Then, new people step in, and the cycle repeats. Despite the game having its roots in a children’s game, the real strength of World Chase Tag is how dedicated its participants are. Both chasing and evading require quick thinking and graceful movement, and in a game where the slightest wrong move could lose your team the game, every player’s contribution is invaluable.
Shin Kicking
What is it?
Of all the strange sports out there, shin kicking may just be the oddest sport to stand the test of time. Originating in early England, this “sport” (I use the term “sport” in heavy quotation marks) is exactly what you think it is. During the event, two contestants grab each other by the shoulder and repeatedly try to kick each other in the shins until one of them falls over. That’s it. You may be thinking that you’re missing something, but that’s truly it. No pads, no points, just pain tolerance and pure stubbornness.
How does it work?
Matches are typically a headline of rural festivals in England, where “brave” participants proudly stuff their pants with straw for protection before going to town on each other’s shins in a battle of endurance. The winners, if you can even call them that, adore the bragging rights that come with their victories.
It’s one of those sports that seems to exist purely because someone said, “I bet I can kick harder than you,” centuries ago, and no one had the sense to stop them. Yet, despite its shin-destroying, ridiculous nature, the sport still serves as a humorous reminder that human determination (and questionable decision-making skills) knows no limits.
My overall analysis
To outsiders, these oddball competitions may seem like a joke, but it proves that even in the strangest corners of the sports world, there are activities for everyone. Whether you love playing with marbles or breaking your best friend’s shins, there’s a group of people out there just like you. That’s the real beauty of these sports’ existence: no matter how ridiculous, the love of the game is always there.
