The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) is having their annual walk on Oct. 13th at Bucks County Community College. The walk is two miles long and registration is at 4:30p.m.
The LLS is the world’s largest non-profit organization to blood cancer research and informational programs for patients.
The LLS has been dedicated to adult stem cell cancer research for 60 years now. They travel all across the United States and Canada to have these walks in hopes to raise enough money to reach their goal. The goal of this society is to “raise one million U.S. dollars for the fight against cancer in 2012, “according to www.foundationbeyondrelief.org .
When the amount is exceeded every year, money goes to support programs the LLS offers cancer patients. With all the money the LLS raises, it goes toward cancer research.
“LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer,” according to www.lls.org
This walk is called “Light the Night” because everyone that is walking gets a balloon: each balloon has a light in it. And when it gets dark enough, as a group of people, the balloons are let go. The red balloons represent the supporters, the white represent the survivors, and the gold represent the fighters that have passed away.
The walks provide a sense of hope to the people who have this disease. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in America and we need to find a cure.
The walk has one purpose and it is what all the walkers want to achieve- cure cancer.
