After over 40 years of partnership between The Salvation Army and Walmart, the ever-growing charity Angel Tree has blown up all over social media, and the sudden flow in popularity to donate has come from one woman: Serena Neel.
For the less fortunate, the holiday season can be tough. The expectations for the amount of presents under a tree seemingly grows every year, but with foundations like Angel Tree, these families are given the opportunity to have other gifting families donate Christmas gifts.
As this foundation has begun to expand, Neel has become the forefront on social media, inspiring other creators to give back to the community.
Her most popular video, with over 38.4 million views and 8 million likes, documents one angel tree family whose son asked for a calico kitten for Christmas.
“I got in contact with Angel Tree, who got in contact with the family and confirmed that he wants a literal kitten,” Neel expressed in the TikTok video. “We’re meeting up with the mom in a few hours so let’s go get him a kitten.”
After loading carts up with cat food, supplies, toys, and a $200 gift card, Neel met up with the family to personally deliver the kitten.
“I wasn’t sure if the boy was gonna be there, but he was,” Neel said. “So I got to watch him meet his new cat. He’s so sweet and the cat is so sweet. I hope they just have the best life together.”
In her most recent angel tree video, posted on Dec. 13, Neel filled six carts for a family of seven. However, Angel Tree isn’t just about who can spend the most money, it’s bringing awareness to the less fortunate in the holiday season.
It’s important for creators all over social media, not just Neel, to use their platform to inspire others.
So maybe next holiday season, if you’re walking into a store and see a Christmas tree filled with these little slips of paper, consider picking one up. Even just one donation could change a family’s entire Christmas.
