LANGHORNE, PA—Among the hundreds of students and staff in the Neshaminy High School (NHS) community, one familiar face is the well-known “talk of the town.” Security Guard Dan has found new ways to spread childhood cancer awareness through his platform as part of Mini-Thon.
Security Guard Dan is an NHS celebrity and one of the most discussed staff members in the entire school.
A figure most known for guarding the hallway has turned a new cheek in light of Mini-Thon by participating in a “Pie Dan” event at the end of push week, a time Mini-Thon has dedicated to try and raise the most amount of money from students and staff to pie Dan and NHS principal, Stephen Gartska, in the face. This gave senior and Mini-Thon Co-Chair Gabby Capaldi, who raised the most money for Mini-Thon, racking up about $900, the opportunity to ultimately pie Dan.
“[It] gives the kids a chance to get back at their teachers,” Dan expressed.
With an entire hub filled with kids, Capaldi prepped the plate of whipped cream. Countless phones were unlocked and ready to record the moment everyone awaited.
“[It’s] for a good cause, raise money, [and] fight childhood cancer,” Dan voiced.
With a pile of whipped cream in her hand, Capaldi smashed the plate into the center of Dan’s face. The event was live-streamed on the Mini-Thon Instagram, which captured a historic moment for the entire school.
The volunteer from Dan helped raise awareness for a cause that is often overlooked. He stepped up, even when it meant embarrassment was inevitable.
The Mini-Thon successfully raised $70,956.00, completely crushing its goal of $50,000. All funds were donated to the Four Diamonds Foundation in support of childhood cancer.
When asked if Dan regretted any part of his decision, he responded, “No, not at all; for the kids.”
