On Nov. 7, 2024, Netflix released part two of the fourth season of their hit TV show “Outer Banks”. The series, which has been running since Apr. 20, 2020, made waves during the pandemic. The treasure-hunt plot, beach setting, and platonic as well as romantic relationships allowed viewers an escape from the conditions the world was under.
The relationships between the cast members elevated the viewers’ love for the show, with most of the cast living in the same apartment complex during the pandemic and on-screen couple Chase Stokes, who plays John B. Routledge, and Madelyn Cline, who plays Sarah Cameron, dating until November of 2021.
When part one of season four dropped on Oct. 10, it gained 15.5 million views and exceeded that amount when part two dropped on Nov. 7. Fans were excited and happy to see their ragtag crew of six back together again. However, when part two came out, fans were outraged.
Without giving any spoilers, one of the most loved characters of “Outer Banks” was killed off with no foreshadowing. This character had a rough background, and when things were finally starting to look up for them, they were gone.
One X.com user posted “I’M [deada**] JUST SITTING HERE BAWLING” and “JUST CANCEL THIS [sh**] IM NEVER WATCHING IT AGAIN.” along with thousands of other X users posting similar statements.
With the death of this character, criticism of the show’s runners and creators, Shannon Burke, Jonas Pate, and Josh Pate, and the cast members have been circulating around social media. Fans condemned the Pates specifically for killing off this beloved character and the character’s actor itself, attributing the exit to drama between the actor’s partner and other cast members.
Fans also criticized the unprofessionalism between the cast and the chemistry, after they realized that two of the main actors and actresses who played a couple needed stunt doubles for a scene where their characters were cuddling, and how far apart they stood from each other in promotional pictures and events.
Many started making jokes about how Drew Starkey, who plays Rafe Cameron, is the only actor who gave a good performance. Many of them attribute it to the fact he is starring in a widely anticipated book-inspired film called “Queer”. The film is directed by Luca Guadanino, who also directed films “Call Me By Your Name” and “Challengers”. The film also stars Daniel Craig, who previously played James Bond and starred in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” with another “Outer Banks” star, Madelyn Cline.
Many fans have considered not watching season five, which is expected to premiere in 2025, but other fans want to enjoy one last ride with the crew in Kildare.
