On Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, the Recording Academy released their nominees for the 2025 Grammys, set to take place on Feb. 25, 2025. The eligibility period for music to be submitted was from Sept. 16, 2023, and concluded on Aug. 30, 2024. The nominees included familiar faces, such as Taylor Swift, Béyonce, Billie Eilish, and Kendrick Lamar, and some new faces as well, including Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, and Sabrina Carpenter. Beyoncé led all nominees with 11 this year, in four different genre categories (Pop, Country, Rap, and Americana).
Female artists dominated the most popular categories with Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift all in the running for Best Pop Vocal Album and Beyoncé, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, and Chappell Roan in the running for Best Pop Solo Performance.
Charlie XCX’s BRAT Summer seemed to serve her well, landing nominations for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Music Video, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Dance Pop Recording, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Dance/Electronic Album, and Best Remixed Recording.
Even though Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter have been in the music industry for over a decade, both received their first Grammy nominations this year. Carpenter landed in the Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Remixed Recording category, and Roan landed in the Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album category.
Some fans online seemed to disagree with the placement of Carpenter and Roan in the Best New Artist category and expressed their criticism of Taylor Swift’s submissions.
“If you can believe it, Taylor Swift is one of the most nominated artists for Song of the Years,” @theeswiftologist (Zachary), TikTok creator with 125.4K followers said. “ I think she has seven nominations, and she has never won it before. And you know why? Because she continuously chooses stupid songs to submit, and she’s done it again this year. She will not be winning Song of the Year, and nor should she because what she submitted does not deserve [it]”.
Swift submitted Fortnight, featuring Post Malone for Song of the Year, her first single off her new album “The Tortured Poet’s Department.” Zachary also points out that Beyoncé submitted songs other than “Texas Hold Em’”, her lead single from her new album “Cowboy Carter” in different categories to try and give her album a broader range to win.
The Grammys will be broadcast on Feb. 25, 2025, on the CBS Television Network and streamed on Paramount + on demand. Tune in to see if Swift will win song of the year, how many awards Beyoncé will rack up, and if newcomer Chappell Roan will leave with a golden gramophone.
