The Korean musician Park Jae Sung better known by his stage name, PSY is now known worldwide because of his sensational music video, “Gangnam Style”. This artist was introduced to millions of Americans after he performed at MTV’s video music awards on Sept. 6.
Chenda Ngak from CBS News noted that the song debuted on YouTube on July 15 and currently has “2,918,953 likes on the video sharing site” which is a Guinness World Record and as of Sept. 27 it has been viewed over 292 million times.
According to Braden Goyette from the New York Daily News this video was viewed 100 million times in 51 days “faster than Justin Bieber’s “Baby” and Rebecca Black’s “Friday”. Since July 23 parodies of this video have been uploaded by the dozens. Numerous celebrities, such as T-Pain, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, and Tom Cruise have shared the song on Facebook and Twitter.
“Gangnam Style” has also been featured on Ellen DeGeneres, the Today Show, Saturday Night Live and Samsung commercials.
During the Ellen show, PSY personally appeared and tried to teach Britney Spears the signature dance move known as “the Horse-Riding Dance”. The rapper could not believe his popularity. At one point he thought that his life was like the movie “The Truman Show” which is about a man that unknowingly is featured on a reality television show.
A few years back kids in the hallways were doing “the Dougie” and now “the Horse Dance” can be seen throughout Neshaminy High School’s locker banks. “It is definitely the new Cha Cha Slide,” explained sophomore Julie Hemmingway.
