Springle ball proves to be smashing success

Q102, Philadelphia’s number one radio station has had a tradition of organizing a concert every year before Christmas named the Jingle Ball which collects popular artists each year at the Wells Fargo Center to perform. After last year’s sold out show, the radio’s new objective was to create a similar “Ball” earlier in the year.

For the first time, on Tuesday, May 22 Springle Ball was introduced to the Wells Fargo Stage. The line-up of artists included The Wanted, Calvin Harris, Hot Chelle Rae, Austin Mahone, Carly Rae Jepson, Cody Simpson, Adam Lambert, Chris Rene, Enrique Iglesias, Chiddy Bang, Train, and Flo Rida.

With The Wanted opening on stage, not many seats at the center were taken, but by the middle of Calvin Harris’s DJ-ing there was a packed house on their feet, singing along to the songs. Hot Chelle Rae dominated their performance by singing their two hit singles “Tonight, Tonight” and “I Like it Like That.”

Following the band were newcomers Austin Mahone, Carly Rae Jepson and Cody Simpson. The two young male artists made all the teenage girls scream and hold signs asking for their hands in marriage. Mahone went for the bad-boy look singing “11:11” with awkward break-dancers in the background. Simpson on the other hand had a more calm and smooth look to him while he sang “All Day.” Meanwhile, Jepson performed her well-known hit “Call Me Maybe.” Her song might be catchy, but to many viewers she looked like a five year old jumping around the stage during her performance.

The two American Idol runner-ups were also welcomed with Lambert singing a couple new songs, but closing up with “What Do You Want from Me.” Chris Rene left with the crowd disappointed because he only sang one song on his guitar, “Young Homie.” Later on in the show, Chiddy Bang came back to their hometown of Philadelphia coming onstage twice with their version of “Ray Charles” and another hip-hop remake.

It was no doubt that the main three acts of this concert were Enrique Iglesias, Flo Rida and Train. The first of the three was Enrique Iglesias who sang his heart-warming debut of “Hero.” During the song he made an unexpected surprise by picking a random teenager from the audience to sing along with him on-stage.

Train, who followed Iglesias, also moved the audience with their last song when, Patrick Monahan, their lead vocalist dedicated “Drops of Jupiter” to his father. “You could see everyone in the stands singing along to the emotional lyrics,” freshman Angela Sanson said.

The final act of the night will never be forgotten by the fans. “The night was unbelievable, but the highlight was definitely when Flo Rida surfed the crowd and I got to carry him.” freshman Nicole Nisivoccia said. Starting with a couple of his main hits, Flo Rida got the audience on their feet in a matter of seconds. He completed a total of seven songs to which the crowd sung along. During his performance Flo Rida took of his jacket, shirt, gold watch and glasses, throwing it all into the crowd.

The new version of Jingle Ball was a complete success and hopefully will be repeated with as much enthusiasm next year.
