Diversity Pride Club celebrates Black History month

By Liz Daniel
Staff Writer

Diversity Pride Club is celebrating Black History Month this February at Neshaminy High School. Black History Month is an opportunity to emphasize and educate others of the great accomplishments and strides that have been taken by black people throughout history and have forever changed the way black people live in society today. Black History Month originally derived from Carter G. Woodson’s “Negro

History Week” to cultivate awareness of black accomplishments that have been and still is neglected
from school curriculum.

Janel Pascucci, senior and president of the Diversity Pride Club says, “Black History Month is a time to remind ourselves of how far we’ve come as people and how much closer our generation is coming to peace between all races. Black History Month isn’t just about remembering influential people like Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks but to reflect on how all of the suffering our ancestors dealt with in order to give us a life that they could have.”

Through the years, historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Langston Hughes, Marcus Garvey, Rosa Parks and many others have continued to expand black history and show that we must not let our accomplishments divide us but you unite us and celebrate our community as a whole. The success of these historical leaders have come through peace and patience while fighting for the right of all colored people to be treated equally.

The mission of The Diversity Pride club, as stated in the pledge, is to improve diversity, develop healthy relationships and to create and promote a positive image for all people. They pledge to respect diversity within all students, and will not pass judgments and/or speak upon judgments out loud. They are a club that reflects and promotes acceptance for all.

Black History Month was created to educate all people and inspire them to fight for their rights no matter the circumstances. We are the future and maybe one day Black History will be celebrated every day instead of just for a month. Join The Diversity Pride Club this February in celebrating Black History Month not to be divided among races, but united as people.
