Charlie Hebdo continues racism, immature behavior

Brynn MacDougall, Op-ed Editor

Charlie Hebdo, famous for its offensive portrayal of Muslims, has once again made the headlines.

The magazine recently released an issue featuring a deceased Syrian refugee child, Aylan Kurdi, as a sex offender, likely in response to the widespread sexual violence on New Year’s Eve in Cologne, Germany.

The cartoon is an insult not only to an innocent child, but to Kurdi’s family, and humanity as a whole.
Sexual harassment and assault should never be the subject of a joke. They are serious problems that most, if not all, women must deal with in their lifetimes. And blaming innocent a 3-year-old does nothing to help anyone.

While some may argue that the cartoon is justified, as the sexual violence in Cologne was reportedly perpetrated by migrants, birth citizens commit the same crimes on a daily basis. Coupled with the so-called satirical magazine’s extreme racism and xenophobia, it is easy to see that Charlie Hebdo hates migrants and refugees and will take any opportunity they can to promote their racist and xenophobic propaganda, stooping as low as to turn an innocent child into a villain, for no other reason than his race.

As a global society, compassion towards refugees is a must and sexual violence must be dealt with in a
professional manner.
