    Playwickian editors receive state award

    For Immediate Release

    LANGHORNE, Pa. (September 22, 2014) – The Neshaminy High School newspaper editorial board members received the ACLU 2014 Civil Libertarian Award and will be honored at the ACLU of Pennsylvania 2014 Bill of Rights Dinner on Oct. 8, 2014 at the National Museum of American Jewish History.

    The student editorial board fought for the freedom of the student press and defended their decision to refuse to print the word “Redskins” the name of their school football team, because of its racist overtones.

    Other 2014 Civil Libertarian Award winners include:

    •The clients in Whitewood v. Wolf, whose courage helped to secure the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Pennsylvania.

    •Hangley Aronchick Segal Pudlin & Schiller, which dedicated substantial resources and talent to win the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Pennsylvania as plaintiffs’ co-counsel in Whitewood v. Wolfwith ACLU-PA, the ACLU LGBT & AIDS Project, and University of Pennsylvania School of Law Professor Seth Kreimer.

    •Arnold & Porter, LLP, which partnered with ACLU-PA, Advancement Project, and the Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia in Applewhite v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to block the state’s voter ID law and prevent the disenfranchisement of hundreds of thousands of voters in Pennsylvania.
